Laser Desensitization

Ooh, aah, ouch, an intensely painful electrifying shock that goes straight up and hits your brain! Yes, that extremely uncomfortable tingle that goes from tooth to head when you sip your coffee can make you shudder and raise your brow! It is tooth sensitivity, a sharp, shooting pain in one or more teeth triggered by foods or beverages that are hot, cold, sweet or acidic. It can range from a slight twinge to a severe discomfort that can continue for several hours. If your teeth scream out in protest every time you indulge in your favorite ice cream or take a sip of a hot cappuccino, then you must be suffering from the stinging teeth zing – tooth sensitivity. This sudden tickle or sting should never be ignored as it can lead to other oral problems. It is important to seek immediate professional help to desensitize you teeth.

The Procedure
The exposed roots surfaces are coated with fluoride varnish. Then, a laser is used to heat the varnish on a low setting that penetrates the pores in the tooth roots, seals them and blocks the transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the tooth nerve. Your enamel will be strengthened by the varnish and the sensitivity of your nerves will be reduced.

The Symptoms
You may need Laser desensitization if you
  • Have receding gums that expose the roots of your tooth making it highly sensitive to extremely high or low temperatures
  • Have a damaged or decaying tooth that exposes the sensitive nerves within the tooth
  • Suffer from wear down of tooth enamel due to aggressive brushing, exposing dentin
  • Have gum tissue that is sore, inflamed and exposes roots causing tooth sensitivity
The Eligibility
You are eligible for Laser desensitization if you
  • Have a difficult time enjoying your favorite foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, ice-cream and others
  • Have realistic expectations of the outcome & procedure
The Risks Involved
Risk of damage to the underlying tissues due to the heat the laser emits.

The Impact
The varnish will last for about a year and after that the treatment needs to be repeated. Sensitive teeth are not only painful, but they can also begin to interfere with your day to day activities. If you feel an achy pain radiating from the core of your teeth when ingesting an icy beverage or enduring a gust of cold wind as you walk outside, it is important to fix a dental appointment to desensitize your teeth. No more enduring tooth sensitivity. Eliminate the discomfort from eating your favorite foods with laser desensitization!
