Biomechanical Analysis

Overview

Developing correct biomechanics play a crucial role in injury prevention, recovery and performance efficiency across all sports. Biomechanical analysis provides a systematic way of assessing the ‘mechanics of human movements’. It involves a comprehensive assessment of the structural integrity and functional alignment of your body paying special attention to the feet, ankles, legs, thighs, hips and lower back. A Bio-mechanist/Physiotherapist will examine and identify faulty movement patterns that inhibit peak performance and/or predispose you to a debilitating injury. Yes, only a Bio-mechanist/Physiotherapist who specializes in ‘biomechanics’ can assess and treat biomechanical issues, advising you on the further management required along the way. Improve your overall performance and prevent injury – with Biomechanical analysis! Stay healthy and take your game to the next level! With Biomechanical analysis – you gain a better understanding of your body's correct mechanics!

The Procedure

An initial assessment includes taking of pertinent history, other medical information and injury details. Then a biomechanical assessment is performed where the various joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons will be individually evaluated to accurately determine the nature of the injury. A video gait analysis is done to make an assessment of your walking/running style. A non-weight bearing anatomical examination, manual muscle testing, range of motion analysis and weight bearing lower limb posture assessment is done. Following this you will be provided with a customized exercise plan geared to address any identified mechanical faults. This ultimately helps to improve your joint mobility, regain proper body mechanics and enhance physical performance.

The Symptoms

You may need a Biomechanical analysis if

  • You are experiencing pain in your hip, thigh, knee, shin, ankle, foot or lower back during exercise and/or walking/running
  • You have sore heels, aching arches, pain in the ball of your foot, sore toes or want to know why you build up hard skin (corns and calluses)
  • You feel unstable when standing
  • You have a significant leg length discrepancy or flat footedness that causes abnormal moving patterns

The Eligibility

You are eligible for a biomechanical assessment if

  • You are intending to check for abnormalities and possible causes of pain in your foot, ankle, knee and hip or lower back
  • You are recovering from an injury or surgery
  • You are looking to optimize your biomechanics to reduce your risk of injury and enhance performance

The Risks Involved

Biomechanical assessment is a scientific approach to analyze ‘human movement patterns’ in order to bring about a balance to your entire body. Hence it is a safe and effective way to understand good biomechanics - the way your body was designed to work!

The Impact

Having done a biomechanical assessment the bio-mechanist/physiotherapist will collate the information and prescribe exercises to help you achieve your goals. A customized exercise program is set to help you normalize and optimize your biomechanics. This allows for better sports performance and/or less injury risk.
